Cherilyn Sarkisian was born on 20 May 1946 in El Centro, California. A nickname of Cher and a 1962 encounter with Sonny Bono led to the formation of the super-couple Sonny & Cher. They shot to fame with their multi-million-selling transatlantic number one single 'I Got You Babe' and their also-multi-million-selling US number two debut album 'Look At Us'. Further hits followed such as the US top tens 'Baby Don't Go', 'The Beat Goes On' and 'A Cowboy's Work Is Never Done' plus the million-sellers 'Little Man' and 'All I Ever Need Is You'.

Cher juggled all this with a solo career, churning out her own big hits such as her million-selling debut album 'All I Really Want To Do', the Gold-certified Grammy-nominated album 'Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves', the US number two single 'Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)' and the US Hot 100 chart-toppers  'Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves', 'Half Breed' and 'Dark Lady'. The duo starred in the highly-successful television series 'The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour', which earned Cher a Golden Globe Award. Unfortunately, Sonny & Cher separated in 1975. However, Cher marched on with a solo television career and a successful delve into disco music with the million-selling US top ten hit 'Take Me Home', before becoming a top-earning live act.

Cher through the decades

The 1980's saw Cher take on Broadway, and star in numerous critically-acclaimed and commercially successful films such as 'Mask', 'The Witches of Eastwick' and 'Silkwood'. Her performance in the latter earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress but her lead role in 1987's 'Moonstruck' saw her take home the award for Best Actress. Cher continued her music career with big hit releases such as the US top tens 'I Found Someone', 'After All', 'If I Could Turn Back Time', and 'Just Like Jesse James', the UK number one 'The Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)' and the multi-platinum albums 'Heart of Stone' and 'Love Hurts'.

After starring in 'Mermaids', touring extensively and branching out her film work into directing with the record-breaking HBO television movie 'If These Walls Could Talk', Cher returned to the top of the charts in 1998 with her Grammy Award-winning single 'Believe', which sold nearly eight million copies worldwide. Its identically-titled parent album sold around ten million copies. Another single from that album, 'Strong Enough', became a million-seller, as did three 'Greatest Hits' albums during the decade - 'Greatest Hits 1965-1992', 'If I Could Turn Back Time - Cher's Greatest Hits' and 'The Greatest Hits'.

In support of the US top ten albums 'Living Proof' and the 'The Very Best of Cher', Cher sold over three million tickets with her 'Farewell Tour' in the 2000's, which also provided her with an Emmy Award-winning television special. During a three year stay in Las Vegas performing her live show 'Cher at The Colosseum', Cher found time in 2010 to star in the movie "Burlesque" and feature on its successful Gold-certified soundtrack album. Cher, who is now 67-years-old and is often labelled the "Goddess of Pop", thankfully shows no signs of quitting showbusiness any time soon, with new single 'Woman's World' out now and a new album coming out in September!
